A combination of culture and tradition is what attendees will find at the annual celebration of El Grito here in the PNW, from the music that invites you to join in the celebration to the aromas and taste of authentic Mexican food that transports you to the Mexico of yesterday and today.

The patriotic celebrations of El Grito, celebrating Mexico’s Day of Independence, will help you remember your homeland and that of your ancestors with joy and patriotism.

El Grito Portland event is the most important Latino event that takes place in the state of Oregon. El Grito celebrates the patriotic holidays of not only Mexico but of Guatemala, Chile, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Brazil. El Grito attracts thousands of people who meet every year to enjoy the party, remember their history, and reaffirm their culture.

The “Grito de Dolores” is the name given to the call that the “priest Hidalgo” (Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla) gave in the city of Dolores when he rang the bells of the Church while carrying a banner portraying the Virgin of Guadalupe. This began the armed struggle that would lead to the independence of Mexico in 1821. Although it is said that his original intentions were not to achieve the autonomy of Mexico but to instead create a civil war that would allow the return of King Fernando VII to the throne of Spain.

In 2018, the Portland’s Consul of Mexico’s Francisco Maas Peña presided over El Grito, on the night of September 15th, outside the Moda Center the home of the Portland Trail Blazers.

This year marks a special celebration for El Grito as Lara Media celebrates 15 years of El Grito. “This great event unites people of all cultures to join in this great Fiesta. Particularly, it helps us as a community to remember who we are and where we come from. As refugees and immigrants, it is very important to maintain our culture, language, and traditions and to maintain it as it is part of our history and part of who we are,” said Victoria Lara CEO of LM and General Director of the event.
