I am 30 and today is the 100th day since I moved out from my mom’s place and into my own apartment. You may ask, why did I wait so long to move out? To be honest I wasn’t even planning to do it. Life happened and my job took me to a city far away from home. I was very happy living with my family. It provided me with the best emotional support, it definitely helped me economically, and I got to eat my mom’s food EVERY SINGLE DAY!

Am I the only Latino who waited until 30 to fly away from the nest? Not at all! In complete contrast to Non-Latinos who are encouraged to be independent as soon as they turn 18, according to the Pew Hispanic Center, 45% of Latinos ages 18 to 34 live with their parents. To the surprise of those collecting data, Latinos mention to be happy with their living situation.

The reason behind the “phenomenon” of happy Latino adults living with their parents is quite simple. To Latinos- family is everything. We live in big groups, we take care of each other, and we stay in very close contact with our love ones. We are an extremely protective community. Unfortunately there’s a lot of hardship in Latino lives (discrimination, immigration issues, low wages, teen pregnancy, among other things) that make us bond and find the strength to keep going together as a unit.

This is why it is smart for businesses to reach out to the Latino community, because connecting with one Latino, means you’ll be connecting to all the Latinos in that family network, which is probably a really big network!
